Local and map pack

The map results sit above the ordinary listings and take the first click. Getting into them is a separate ranking system with its own inputs. This is the work of feeding it properly.

The ground

Where local intent really is in Wakefield

Trades, plant hire, vehicle services, storage, catering supply and professional practices all pull genuine map results across the district. Buyers in these categories search with a place attached because the answer has to be near them.

Distribution and manufacturing enquiries behave differently. A procurement search is national in scope even when the supplier is a mile away. The map pack matters less there than the ordinary results do.

Knowing which of those two situations you are in decides where the month goes.

The method, as provenance

How the profile work is sequenced

  1. Establish what the profile currently claims

Primary category, secondary categories, service list, hours, service area and the description are recorded as they stand today. Most profiles I open have a primary category chosen years ago by whoever happened to claim the listing.

  2. Match the categories to the money

The primary category does more work than everything else on the profile combined because it decides which searches you are eligible for at all. Getting it wrong keeps a business out of results it would otherwise compete in easily.

  3. Make the site agree with the profile

Google cross-reads the profile against the website. A service named on the profile needs a page on the site that genuinely covers it. A profile making claims the website does not support is a weak profile.

  4. Settle the company facts everywhere else

Company name, address and phone number are made consistent across the places that already list you. Nothing then contradicts the profile. Contradiction is what causes both Google and an assistant to hedge.

  5. Watch the queries, not the vanity position

Local rank varies with where the searcher is standing. A single reported position is close to meaningless. I track which queries actually produce profile views, calls and direction requests instead.

Works in scope

Profile rebuild

Every field on the profile is set deliberately rather than left at whatever was typed on the day it was claimed. Categories and the service list are the two that change results most.

Supporting pages on the site

A profile claiming eight services needs a site that covers them, otherwise the claim has nothing behind it. These are real pages written for buyers, not thin location templates.

Fact consistency across the web

Old listings with a previous address or a disconnected number quietly undermine everything else. Clearing them up is unglamorous and it is usually the fastest thing on the list.

Questions about local visibility

Does local SEO work if I have no shopfront customers visit?

Often yes. The map pack is triggered by the search having local intent rather than by the business having a counter. A pallet network member or a contract packer can hold a map position for searches that name a town when the profile and the site agree about what the business does.

Why does my Google Business Profile rank for one search and not another?

The local results are calculated per query. Relevance, distance from the searcher and prominence are weighted differently each time. A profile can sit in the top three for a service it names explicitly and be invisible for a service buried in a paragraph on the website.

Is it worth setting a service area covering the whole of West Yorkshire?

Usually not. A service area stretched wide dilutes the relevance signal without extending the distance Google is willing to show you. It tends to weaken the searches near where you actually are.

How do citations and directory listings fit into this?

Their job is corroboration: the same company name, address and phone number stated consistently in enough places that both Google and an AI assistant can treat those facts as settled. Volume is not the point and buying hundreds of listings has not been the point for years.

Do I need review activity for the map pack to work?

Reviews are one of the signals Google weighs for local prominence. A profile with no recent activity tends to lose ground to one that has it. I will help you set up a way to ask for them honestly but I do not write, source or incentivise reviews.

Enquiries

Local work sits inside the retainer

This is not sold as a separate package because a profile fixed in isolation from the website tends to drift back. It is part of the monthly scope described on the services page.
