The Wakefield search market

Three quite different economies share one postcode district. Each one sends its buyers to a search box in a different frame of mind. That is the whole report in a sentence.

The method

Where the figures in this report come from

Every number here is a Google Search Console impression count from a site I run myself, printed with the source site and the pull window attached. Nothing is estimated, modelled or rounded up.

I have still not commissioned a keyword study of the district, so there is no volume or cost per click figure on this page. What sits alongside the counts is structural observation, offered as exactly that.

Exhibit A

What one site actually recorded for Wakefield terms

Google Search Console, my own Leeds site, 90 days to 18 July 2026 SOURCED

QueryImpressions recorded
seo wakefield92
seo in wakefield8
seo expert wakefield3

Read those as a floor and nothing more. They are what one site that ranks poorly for these terms happened to surface for over ninety days, not the size of the Wakefield market. Real demand is larger and I cannot tell you by how much.

That distinction is the whole reason the figures are printed with their source rather than as a headline. A supplier who hands you a district search volume without showing you the pull is guessing.

Exhibit B

A large share of this demand is not buyers at all

Google Search Console, my own Leeds site, 90 days to 18 July 2026 SOURCED

seo training course leeds14

Subtotal of the rows above823

Those are Leeds figures from a Leeds site and they are not Wakefield's. What travels across the Pennines and down the M1 is the shape rather than the count.

People typing a phrase like this include jobseekers and course buyers, not only businesses wanting to hire an agency. A local firm chasing the bare head term is bidding for attention against training providers and job boards.

Exhibit C

The demand sits at positions nobody sees

Across both of the sites above, in the 90 days to 18 July 2026, every single query returned a click-through rate of 0.00% except one. That exception was the phrase seo guildford, which produced one click from 1,035 impressions. Average positions ran roughly 40 to 95. SOURCED

That is unflattering about my own sites and it is the honest reading. MECHANISM Impressions accumulate long before clicks do, because a page at position 40 to 95 is present in the index and invisible to the searcher.

The lesson for a Wakefield business is that being findable and being found are different states. A term you technically rank for can send you nothing at all.

The observations

Logistics searches are operational, not local

Wakefield district's position on the M1 and M62, with the A1(M) a short run east, is the reason so much national distribution capacity sits here. The buyers of that capacity are procurement and logistics managers who search in the language of the operation.

Ambient pallet storage, bonded warehousing, co-packing runs, cross-dock capacity: these are the phrases, and they usually arrive without a town name attached. The supplier is chosen on capability and geography in that order.

Sites that lean on the town name and neglect the operational vocabulary miss this demand entirely.

Food production buyers shortlist before they enquire

Food manufacturing and packing buyers tend to research quietly and at length before making contact. Switching costs are high and accreditation matters. Much of that research is comparison and verification rather than discovery.

This is precisely the shape of task that people now hand to an AI assistant. Entity consistency and verifiable company facts therefore do disproportionate work in this sector.

A firm whose certifications, capacity and site details are hard to establish gets quietly dropped from the shortlist before any conversation happens.

Professional services compete on the town name

The professional firms clustered in and around the city centre face the opposite pattern: their buyers genuinely do attach the town to the search. That makes the map pack and locally framed pages the primary battleground.

It is also the most contested category because every competitor has worked out the same thing. Differentiation comes from depth on a specialism rather than from repeating the town name more often.

The district is not one local market

Local results are calculated relative to where the searcher is standing. A business in Pontefract and one in Ossett are not really competing for the same map positions despite sharing a district. Treating the district as one market overstates competition in some places and understates it in others.

For organic and AI answers the picture inverts and geography matters far less than clarity does.

The conclusion

Which decision comes first

The first decision for any Wakefield business is which of those three patterns describes its buyers. That choice determines whether the effort belongs in the map pack, in operational content, or in being verifiable enough to survive a shortlisting.

Getting that decision wrong is the most common reason local SEO spend produces nothing.

Questions about this report

Are there figures in this report?

Yes, and they are small and honestly framed. Three Wakefield queries recorded impressions on my own Leeds site over the 90 days to 18 July 2026, and those three counts are printed exactly as they came out of Search Console. They are a floor rather than a market size, for the reason set out beside the table.

Why is 103 impressions not the size of the Wakefield market?

Because it is what one site that ranks badly for those terms happened to surface for, not what people searched. A site at position 40 or worse is shown to a fraction of the people who searched, so the count it records is always lower than real demand. The true figure is larger and I do not know by how much.

Which Wakefield sector has the easiest search opportunity?

Usually the specialist industrial and trade services. Their buyers use precise operational language that generic agencies never write pages for. Broad terms like SEO or marketing are the crowded ones and are rarely where the money is.

Does being outside Wakefield city centre hurt a business in local search?

For map pack results distance from the searcher genuinely matters. A Castleford or Pontefract address competes best in its own area. For ordinary organic results and AI answers it makes very little difference.
